A tip for DotNetNuke, mojoPortal, MonoX installs: the wizard for each CMS works fine if you install it to an empty database. Please also remember that nopCommerce 2.7 and above requires Windows 2012/IIS8/.NET 4.5 Framework.
You may remember that last year around this time we reported that we placed fourth in the DevProConnections Community Choice Awards.
Well I’m proud to announce that this year we placed – fourth!
Again.
And just like last year, we’ll take it, since the top three are the same behemoths that eclipsed us last year (Amazon, GoDaddy and DiscountASP.NET).
We feel pretty good about placing above Rackspace, another monster host that could lose more customers than we have and not even notice it.
But next year – you’ll see – we’re going to crack that top three!
We’re working hard on some cool new stuff (if I tell you about it now, they’ll fire me), but suffice it to say that we’re always working to make Winhost the world’s best hosting platform, and the kind of place where your sites can be proud to live.
Here’s to fourth place, and nipping at the heels of the giants!

Our team has updated the App Installer tool in the Winhost Control Panel. Here is a list of the updated applications:
We know you’re hungry for the latest and greatest, so we’re really happy to announce that we’ve put away the jackhammers and wrenches, the dust has settled, and Windows 2012 hosting is now available at Winhost!
The Windows 2012 platform supports all of the latest Microsoft technologies; IIS 8, ASP.NET 4.5, MVC 4, WebMatrix 2, Entity Framework 5, ASP.NET Web API, WebSockets, Visual Studio 2012, Visual Studio Express 2012, and even Dynamic IP restriction. That’s a bumper-crop of fresh new goodies to make all of our lives more interesting.
What’s the catch? There isn’t one!
Okay, there is one little catch.
ASP.NET 4.5/IIS 8 is only available on the Windows 2012 platform. If you want to migrate an existing site to the new platform, we can help you with that. Just drop a note to support saying that you want to move to Windows 2012 and they will make it happen. Quick and painless.
We’re not yet sure if or when we will upgrade the existing Windows 2008/IIS 7 servers to .NET 4.5. There are some potential issues that we are keeping an eye on, and when we’re satisfied that we can move to .NET 4.5 on the existing servers without any disruption, we’ll make the move. But at the moment we can’t give you a time frame on when that may happen.
So if you want .NET 4.5 now, just let us know and we’ll hook you up.
Last year you turned out in force and voted for us in the DevProConnections Community Choice Awards, and we placed fourth behind some industry heavyweights!
Well guess what? We are nominated again! And it would be great for this still scrappy upstart to show the big boys what we’re made of. If you have a couple of minutes to spare, we would appreciate your vote!
We’re listed under 10. Hosting Service. Voting closes on Friday the 28th, so please pop on over there as soon as you have a chance.
It would be quite a feat to move up in those rankings considering the competition, but anything is possible, right? Vote!
And thank you for your time, your support, and most of all, thanks for using Winhost!
People often write to support or post in the forum asking us why their php.ini files aren’t working. Well, php.ini is a unix/linux file, so it doesn’t work on Windows servers. The next question is always, “So how do I control php settings?” To which we have always had to answer, “Sorry, you can’t.”
Until now.
With the introduction of PHP 5.3.10, we have provided you with the ability to upload your own user.ini file, in order to specify php settings you wish to change for your account. If you’ve used a php.ini file on a linux server, this is the same concept. You simply create a text file named user.ini in the root of your account. The file can include php settings such as:
upload_max_filesize = 200M
date.timezone = “Europe/London”
These settings will be changed for your site only. While most of these settings are safe to change, the user.ini file does give you a lot of control over how php works for your site, so use your best judgement as to what you change.
If you are the experimental type and wind up making a change that causes problems with your site, simply remove the line(s) causing trouble and re-upload the file. Note that there is a five minute server cache for user.ini changes, so you may not see your changes until a few minutes after uploading.
We’re excited to be able to offer the php flexibility that you’ve been asking for. As always, we want Winhost to be the best host on the planet, so we’re listening to you and working hard to meet your needs every day. Thanks for working with us!
